 MISSION

Our goals remain as clear and strong as they were when CALI was formed in 1967:

To advance the professions of licensed investigators and security professionals;

To provide education and training to all licensed professionals; and

To articulate and advocate the needs and interests of the professions before legislative, administrative, and judicial branches of government.

Through quarterly conferences and seminars, publications, community programs, and advocacy on behalf of our profession, we honor our commitment to our colleagues and clients.

 President's Report

Believe it or not, the first quarter of the CALI fiscal year is already behind us. Some major accomplishments have been achieved. AB 5 (Gonzalez) was signed by Governor Newsom. Thanks to the leadership and determination of Legislative Advocate Jerry Desmond and Government Affairs Committee Chairperson Francie Koehler and the written and verbal support demonstrated by many members, licensed Private Investigators were exempted from this legislation. This may be CALI's greatest legislative achievement. This achievement was made possible by years and years of building relationships in the capitol and with multiple stakeholders. There are hundreds of professions that did not receive an exemption from AB 5. Some are similar to the private investigation industry and others totally different. We owe a huge "thank you" to Ms. Koehler and Mr. Desmond for your leadership and this monumental accomplishment to save the PI profession as we know it.

CALI is experiencing large attendance at our educational events in northern and southern California. Another seminar regarding background investigations will take place in Irvine, CA on Saturday, October 26, 2019. An AOE/COE seminar is being scheduled in Fresno in the near future. Be sure to partake in these educational events.

The Board of Directors has joined in promoting my "1+1" initiative by extending a special membership rate for new members that are brought in or sponsored by an existing member. This one year membership rate is $175. Bring some new members to your association. The next Board meeting is November 9, 2019 in San Jose.

CALI's Leg Day is scheduled for March 9, 2020 in Sacramento. NLITE will be March 7 and a BOB meeting will be held on March 8, 2020. The 2020 Annual Conference will be held at the Rivera Resort and Spa in Palm Springs from June 11 to 13, 2020. Speakers and registration details will be announced in early 2020.

Support your local District!

In Memoriam

A Tribute to Jack Harley Reed

CALI and the entire private investigation profession recently lost a pioneer to the industry.  Lifetime member Jack Harley Reed from Fullerton, CA recently passed away.

Jack was a Certified Private Investigator, lawyer, legal Investigator and businessman extraordinaire.  Preferring to be referred to simply as "Jack", he was truly an amazing man with a heart brighter than a full moon in the southern sky and a brain that always ran at least as fast as the speed of sound. A message from Dietz Associates, Inc. regarding the passing of fellow P.I., Gregg M. Dietz

On behalf of our entire team at Dietz Associates, Inc., I am writing with my deepest regrets to announce the recent passing of Gregg Dietz. He fought hard, but succumbed after a brief illness. This is without a doubt a great loss to the community. Mr. Dietz was the epitome of class and touched many lives. Click here to continue reading.

Treasurer Report

CALI's fiscal year is heading into its second quarter with very few hiccups to our spending. CALI's balance sheet remains very strong, with slight upticks and downticks based on market conditions and spending. Regular membership dues remain at an affordable $225.00 and there are no anticipated increases in the near future. Click here to read the full Treasurer Report from Chris Reynolds.

District Meeting Updates

North Bay District

The North Bay District held its first meeting of the year on Wednesday, September 4th. The meeting was held at Santa Rosa's Villa Restaurant. Seventeen people were in attendance. Most were CALI members. A few were new investigators or former CALI members that have vowed to renew their membership.

The speaker was Santa Rosa Attorney William (Bill) Adams, a partner is the business law firm of Merrill, Arnone and Jones. Bill spoke on the topic of workplace investigations. His energetic and enthusiastic talk covered workplace investigations from the perspective of both a public entity and private sector lawyer. Bill has overseen investigations as a private practitioner and as a Deputy County Counsel Attorney with the local County Counsel's Office. Bill asked to group to call him with any questions that might arise during the course of any workplace investigation. He was encouraged to see the number of local investigators interested in the topic and improving skills with ongoing and continuing education.

The next gathering of the North Bay District will be in early October in Napa at the home of District Director Dawn King. Details will be announced soon.

Respectfully submitted,

Scott Wilmore, Wilmore & Associates

Los Angeles District

On Saturday September 7th, the Los Angeles District had poolside comedy for the end of summer BBQ with the very funny Gali Kroup. There was also a great Q&A session with Dennis Broad from TMZ. LA District Director and Past President Jay Rosenzweig hosted the event. Thanks to District Governor Howard Dratch for helping put this event together. Also thanks to all who attended and brought amazing food.
