District update by Sandra Copas, PI, CFE
San Jose District Governor 2013-14
CALI Governor of the Year Award Recipient 2012-13

It’s been a little while since I’ve given our district update. My last update covered the February 2013 meeting, Writing Professional Investigative Reports. Handouts are still available so if you would like a copy, click this link and let me know.

This update will cover past events such as the full day training in April on Legal Issues with David Queen and Eric Geffon, the May elections meeting on Self Employed CEOs with Josaf Rodriguez, the CALI Conference in June, and our Annual Retreat in July. It will also give you an idea of what is in store for this term.

April 26, 2013: Legal Issues with David Queen, Eric Geffon and Alayne Bolster

This was covered briefly in my last update but I wanted to give it a little extra attention because it was so well received.
Pictures of this event and others can be viewed in our district photo album.

This was an excellent training event held at By-The-Bucket in San Jose. We had a fantastic turnout. Attendees came from as far away as the San Francisco, Golden Valley, East Bay, North Bay, and Sacramento districts! Thank you everyone for traveling so far!

David Queen was his normal charming self and gave two targeted and educational presentations for us, "How Not To Get Sued (And Other Bad Stuff)” and "Things Worth Knowing.”

We had a fantastic lunch and all you can drink tea and soda. After lunch, Eric Geffon and Alayne Bolster gave their fun and informative presentation, "The Attorney/Investigator Relationship: How To Make Yourself Invaluable.”

This event went so well that we received feedback from people who attended our event and even from those who could not make it but wished they could.

From the Golden Valley District, Jon Jacobson of Dakota Information Group wrote,

"I wanted to take a minute to thank you for allowing me to attend the CALI San Jose training last week. I very much enjoyed the training and the entire event was very well planned and ran effectively. Your organizational abilities remind me of my days in the Marine Corps (gigantic complement!!). Again, thank you, it was a great way to spend a Friday, I learned a TON and had a chance to connect with some wonderful people, what more could a guy ask for?”

From the East Bay district, Juan A Sigler of Sigler and Associates Investigations said,

I want to thank you and your husband for organizing [the] outstanding program last week. It was very informative and I liked having the opportunity to meet you and the other PI's. Look forward to working with you.

Anne La Jeunesse of LaJeune Investigations in El Segundo could not make it but said,

Wow, wish I was up there! Sounds like a great meeting. I love David Queen!

Rich H. Ramirez of RHR & Associates, Inc. in Huntington Beach could not make it either but wrote,

Thanks Sandra . . . the meeting sounds interesting, unfortunately, it’s a bit of a hike for me :) I appreciate you setting this up and I wish more of the DG’s would put materials like this on the CALI site.

With that in mind, presentation slides and notes are available. If you were not able to attend the event, or you attended the event and would like a copy of the slides and notes, please click this link. The slides and notes contain valuable information. Mr. Queen’s slides cover topics such as "How To Avoid Fee Disputes,” and "Business Formations” (what type of business entity should I have for my PI business?) while Mr. Geffon’s handouts cover topics such as "What Do Lawyers Want From An Investigator” and "How To Make Yourself Invaluable.”
